Background[edit]
'Alive' was recorded over a twelve-month period between June 2012 and May 2013 in London, New York City and Los Angeles.[2] The title derives from the song 'Alive' on the album. Writing partners on the album include Australian singer-songwriter Sia Furler and writer Diane Warren. Jessie J tweeted her excitement, saying she was 'living the dream'. Throughout the year, Jessie J made several announcements suggesting that she was recording her second album, including saying: 'For the seven years before I signed my record deal, I was in a bad place, and I was scared that I couldn't get out of it. That’s why I wrote such upbeat music, as a way of trying to escape how I felt. Now that I am happier, I won’t be afraid to explore my pain. But in a good way; it’ll be me saying that it’s OK not to feel OK.'[3]
In June 2013, rumours surfaced online stating Jessie J's new album would be called Gold after she announced to Capital FM that the album's title would be one word, and it had the letter 'O' in it. Although Jessie quickly extinguished these statements in an interview with Digital Spy saying: 'You will see the title and you’ll see the picture and you’ll see the album cover and I think it’s summed up in one word, in one picture.' Jessie announced the title and release date of Alive during a live performance at V Festival on 17 August 2013.[4] In an interview with Laura Whitmore backstage at the festival, she talked about the album, saying it was written in five weeks and had a more mature sound.[5] When asked about her choice for the album title, she said, 'It really represents where I'm at in my life right now and how I feel about my life.'[6]
Promotion and release[edit]
'Square One' was performed acoustically on a Google hangout with her fans.[citation needed] 1 August 2013, saw the premiere of 'It's My Party' through a second Google hangout, with Jessie playing an acoustic preview to her fans with simply guitar riff playing.[7] 'Excuse My Rude' then premiered as a promotional single on 12 August 2013, via an official YouTube audio stream.[8] 'Square One' was released as a promotional single on 30 August 2013, via iTunes.[9] 'Sexy Lady' was used by highstreet retailer Boots to promote its No.7 brand, during a TV ad campaign in September 2013.[citation needed]
Several deluxe bundles are available for order on Jessie J's official website, including a super deluxe bundle with signed poster, 12x12 art print and 'Alive' shaped mirror designed by Jessie J herself. The super deluxe box sets retail for £40 alongside a deluxe copy of the main album. After a fake track list circulated the internet and was noticed by Jessie herself, she was forced to reveal the back cover art of the album and the official track list via Twitter and Instagram.[10]
American version[edit]
On 14 September 2013, Jessie J announced that the American version of the album would be pushed back because her American label 'didn't feel the album would work on their territory'.[11] She was to record new material for it, which was rumoured to be produced by Pharrell Williams.[12] In an interview, she said she planned on moving to the United States the following year in an effort to break into the country's market.[13] In an interview, Jessie said she expected the American version of the album to be released in 2014. This idea was later scrapped for unknown reasons and she began work on a brand new album, 2014's Sweet Talker, worldwide.[14][15] The album was released digitally and on streaming services in the US in August 2015.
Singles[edit]
The album's first single, 'Wild', was released on 26 May 2013. The single, which was written by Jessie J and Claude Kelly, features Big Sean and Dizzee Rascal, and peaked at number five on the UK Singles Chart.[16][17] The song also charted at 9 on the Irish Singles Chart.[18] The music video was directed by Emil Nava and debuted on 25 May 2013.[19]
The second single from the album, 'It's My Party', was released on 15 September 2013. It premiered on Capital FM on 5 August 2013. The music video, directed by Emil Nava, was filmed in late June and released on 8 August 2013.[20][21]
On 17 October 2013, Jessie J announced the release of the album's third and final single 'Thunder', along with its single cover.[22] The song was released on 26 November 2013.[23] The official music video premiered on VEVO on 19 November 2013.[24]

Upon its release, Alive received generally mixed reviews from critics. Some critics widely complimented Jessie J's vocals and self-confidence, while others dismissed the album as 'generic' and 'overwrought'.[25]Gigwise rated the album six stars out of ten and wrote: 'The second studio album by Jessie J certainly showcases her singing talent, but while Alive is a mix of good tracks and powerful lyrics – a lot which is too similar to what's been before, or even what is plainly out at the moment'.[35]Virgin Media also gave the album a mixed review, saying that 'Jessie J has overcome the hurdles of being a moderate singer, bogstandard songwriter and not having an original musical idea in her head to become a bona fide A-list pop star', adding that she 'has risen to the occasion and then some. Alive is a better album than its predecessor, with marginally fewer banal four-to-the-floor beats and more chance for Jessie's personality-plus charisma to shine.'[36]
London Evening Standard was more positive and gave the album 4 out of 5 stars. The newspaper declared Jessie a 'very English response to Katy Perry' and summed Alive as 'thumping, very 21st-century pop [..] It's short on heart but there's genuine craft here, plus star quality and a puppy-like need to be liked.'[29]Digital Spy also reviewed the album positively, writing that 'Alive as a whole is an accomplished pop record by an undeniably talented singer-songwriter that results in a natural progression from her debut – and one that can hopefully win some of those 'haters' over', adding that 'There's no escaping the fact that Alive does have a tendency to switch genre throughout its course, but the overall thinking does feel much more cohesive than her debut.'[27] Heather Phares of AllMusic rated the album three out of five stars. She found that with Alive, Jessie was exploring 'nearly as many sounds on her second album as she did on her debut'. She felt that album's 'simplest and most direct moments, like 'Wild's dance-pop and 'Conquer the World,' a heartfelt duet with Brandy, are among its best.'[26] Phil Mongredien, writing for The Guardian, wrote that 'it's by no means a bad record, although the ballads are best avoided.'[31]
Commercial performance[edit]
Alive debuted and peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart, selling 39,270 copies in its first week of release. The album slipped to number seven selling 14,574 copies the following week. Altogether, Alive spent a total of 12 weeks inside the top 40 of the chart,[37] and by November 2013 had been certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for shipments of 100,000 units.[38] It has sold over 179,000 copies in the United Kingdom as of 2014.[39]
Across Europe, Alive was a moderate success managing to chart inside the top 40 in most countries. In Switzerland, the album debuted at number fifteen, considerably higher than that of her previous album Who You Are which debuted at number twenty-nine. In Austria, the album debuted at number thirty-six, whereas, debuting at number nineteen in Spain and the Netherlands. In France, however, Alive debuted outside the top 100 at number 104. In Oceania the album had some success; in New Zealand, Alive debuted at number eighteen, whereas, in Australia, the album debuted inside the top 10 at number seven before falling to number twenty-eight the following week. Due to the lack promotion in the United States, Alive failed to chart on the US Billboard 200.

Background[edit]
After releasing her second studio album, Alive, in the United Kingdom on 22 September 2013, Jessie J announced that the American version of the album would be pushed back because her American label 'didn't feel the album would work on their territory'.[3] She was then rumored to be recording new material for an American re-release of the album with Pharrell Williams.[4] In an interview, the singer discussed the possibility of moving to the United States in an effort to break back into the country's market.[5] Jessie later said the American version of the album was expected to be released in 2014.[6][7] However, the re-release idea was eventually scrapped. The project became her third studio album, featuring the material recorded with Williams, as well as contributions from producers such as Max Martin and Ammo.[8]
Promotion[edit]
'Ain't Been Done', 'Keep Us Together', 'Sweet Talker' and 'You Don't Really Know Me' were all performed live at Rock in Rio Lisbon on 1 June 2014.[9] 'Bang Bang' was performed live on the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show on 31 July 2014. Moreover, the song was performed as part of the opening medley held by Jessie, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj during the MTV VMAs 2014.[10] In August, Jessie teased a snippet of 2 Chainz's verse on 'Burnin' Up' in an interview with Idolator.[11] On 22 September 2014, Jessie performed at iTunes Festival in London.[12] She sang some songs from the new album, like 'Sweet Talker', 'Your Loss I'm Found', 'Keep Us Together', 'You Don't Really Know Me', 'Ain't Been Done', 'Burnin' Up', and 'Bang Bang'. On 30 September 2014, Jessie announced via Twitter that 'Personal' was made available on iTunes for anyone who pre-ordered the entire album as a promotional single.[13][14] 'Ain't Been Done' and 'Masterpiece' were made available as promotional singles in the same manner on 7 October 2014.[15]
Sweet Talker Tour[edit]
On 4 November 2014, Jessie J announced a six-date tour in the UK. An extra London date was added due to popular demand after tickets sold out for the first date. During 2015 Jessie J travelled around the world promoting her album on the Sweet Talker Tour.
Singles[edit]
The album's first single, 'Bang Bang' featuring Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, was first sent to hot adult contemporary radio on 28 July 2014 through Republic Records,[16] the label that houses all three artists, being released as a digital download the next day through Lava and Republic, and serves as a joint single.[17][18][19] Commercially, the song became a worldwide hit, debuting at number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and eventually peaking at number 3, making it Jessie's highest peaking song on the chart. It also reached the top ten in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.[citation needed]
On 19 September Jessie announced on Instagram that the official second single is 'Burnin' Up' featuring 2 Chainz. The single was released on 23 September on iTunes. On 22 September the song leaked 24 hours earlier than expected.[20] Despite planned release in the United Kingdom, Jessie J's management failed to release it to mainstream radio and as a digital single.
'Masterpiece' was released as the third single from the album. Originally released digitally 7 October 2014 as a promotional single, its music video premiered 10 December 2014 to promote it as the next official single.[21] The single was planned to be added to UK contemporary hit radio on 23 March 2015 but this failed to comprehend for the third time. Despite this, efforts from fans pushed the album song to enter the UK Singles chart at 159.
Promotional singles[edit]
The title track, 'Sweet Talker', was released as a promotional single in the UK and Ireland on December 1, 2014.[22] On July 10, 2015, 'Ain’t Been Done' was released as the second promotional single only in Australia.

The album received mixed reviews from music critics, some of whom complimented Jessie J's confidence and vocals and the overall production, whilst others criticised the songs for being 'generic'. Joanne Dorken from MTV gave it 4 out 5 stars saying that Jessie was 'back with a bang!' and said J's 'fans were in for a treat', praising tracks like 'Ain't Been Done', 'Fire', 'Masterpiece' and 'Sweet Talker', adding that 'Overall, Jessie's third offering sees her going back to basics, while also teaming up with a whole hoard of songwriters (52 in total) to craft her more grown-up, more honest sound.'[30]The Guardian gave the album a positive review, stating that '[J] constructed Sweet Talker to fit a gap somewhere between Beyoncé and Pink', adding that 'it's notable that the best moments come when she uncouples herself from it and just sings for the joy of it, as on the brilliant, fizzy pop banger 'Bang Bang', a deserved No 1 this summer'.[31]
Slant Magazine was more critical towards the album, giving it a mixed review, praising the first four tracks on the album but stating that 'If all Jessie's label wanted was a few bangers, they could have saved themselves some time and money by tacking them onto a repackaged version of Alive and calling it a day'.[32] Katherine St. Aspah of Time Magazine was harsher still, claiming that the album 'solved the problem of doing everything right [to only moderate success]', and comes across as 'slapdash and retooled to an inch of its life'. Aspah did reiterate that 'the one distinguishing factor of the Jessie J Brand, as demonstrated on Sweet Talker, is that she can sing', but then went on to clarify that it seemed 'a curious statement to make in 2014, as the year's biggest divas, our Beyoncés and Arianas, aren't short on chops'.[1]Slant Magazine named it the eighth worst album of 2014.[33]
Commercial performance[edit]
In the United States, Sweet Talker debuted at number ten on the US Billboard 200, selling 25,000 copies in its first week. Despite selling 9,000 copies less than her previous US album, Who You Are, Sweet Talker became Jessie J's first top ten album and her highest charting album in the US to date.[34]In the United Kingdom, 'Sweet Talker' debuted at number five selling 16,733 copies, and is certified Silver for sales over 60,000. The album spent a total of 4 weeks inside the Top 40 of the UK Albums Chart.
